Bioinformatics Open Days is a student-led initiative, first held at the University of Minho, Braga in 2012. It aims to promote the exchange of knowledge between students, teachers and researchers from the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology fields. This symposium’s 4th edition is a joint collaboration with the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Master students of University of Lisbon and will be held at both Universities (Minho and Lisbon) on the 9th and 10th of April. The program will include oral presentations, lectures by researchers from various fields and a general discussion with a group of selected Bioinformatics national corporations.
Ana Teresa Freitas, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Departamento de Informática of Instituto Suprior Técnico (IST). Former head of the Knowledge Discovery and Bioinformatics (KDBIO) research group (2009-2014), developed research activities in the areas of knowledge discovery, computational biology and bioinformatics. She is currently leading projects on Infrastructures for Plant Research, Human Genetics and Metagenomics. Besides her interest in scientific reasearch, Dr. Ana T. Freitas also co-founded, in 2013, and is currently CEO of HeartGenetics and Biotechnology SA., which aims to support clinical diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases through genetic tests and computational tools. Since 2014, she is board member of ELIXIR (here ), representing Portugal.
Nuno Osório is a FCT researcher currently working at the Life and Helath Sciences Research Institute, ICVS/3B's - PT Governement Associate Laboratory and an invited professor at the School of Health Sciences in University of Minho, Braga. The main focus of his research is the understanding at the molecular level of evolutionary, structural and functional aspects of microorganisms. His present work is focused on genome-driven studies of Tuberculosis (TB), by studying genetic markers in the pathogen causing this disease. Further information can be consulted here.
Antonio Munoz Mérida is a researcher currently working in CIBIO-InBIO in University of Porto. His expertise is focused in the field of Bioinformatics with a strong background in the field of Biology and a postgraduate experience in computer science. All this experience was obtained in the University of Malaga from 2000 to 2013. Some of the areas in which he is involved are microarray analysis, software development and markers detection, functional annotation or RNA-seq experiments. Further information can be consulted here.
